How the quilt sashing calculator works
Sashing strips are cut 1/2" wider than the finished sashing, and as long as the block's unfinished size. With cornerstones, every sashing strip is the same short size and a small square fills each intersection.
Without cornerstones, short strips go between the blocks in each row, and long strips run the full width between rows. The calculator counts the pieces and works out how many width-of-fabric strips to cut.
Questions
How wide should sashing be?
A common rule is about one quarter of the block size: 3" sashing for 12" blocks, 2" for 8" blocks. Narrower sashing makes the blocks the focus.
What are cornerstones?
Small squares where the sashing strips meet. They make it easier to line up the rows and add a second color to the grid.
Do I need sashing around the outside?
No. Outer sashing frames each block before the border. Without it, the border goes straight against the blocks.
