Quilt Yardage Calculator

Enter the cut size and how many pieces you need. You get the strips to cut and the yardage.

How the quilt yardage calculator works

Quilters cut pieces from strips that run across the width of the fabric. The calculator figures out how many pieces fit in one strip (about 40" usable after the selvages), how many strips you need, and how long that is in total.

Use the cut size, including seam allowance. Add 10% to cover shrinkage, straightening the edge, and the occasional mis-cut.

Questions

How many 5 inch squares from a yard of fabric?

A yard is 36", so you get 7 strips of 5" with 1" left over. Each strip gives 8 squares, so 56 squares from one yard.

How many 2 1/2 inch strips are in a yard?

14 strips, with 1" left over.

Should I prewash before measuring?

If you prewash, cotton can shrink 3% to 5%. Buy the extra before washing.
