Quilt Size Calculator

Enter your block layout. You get the finished quilt size and how many blocks to make.

How the quilt size calculator works

Quilt width is the blocks across times the block size, plus the sashing between blocks, plus the border on both sides. Length works the same way with blocks down. Always use the finished block size, which is the size after the seams are sewn (a 12 1/2" unfinished block is 12" finished).

Common quilt sizes

SizeTypical finished size
Baby / crib36" × 52"
Throw / lap50" × 65"
Twin70" × 90"
Full / double85" × 108"
Queen90" × 108"
King108" × 108"

These are typical sizes for a quilt that drapes over the sides of the bed. Measure your mattress and decide how much drop you want if you need an exact fit.

Questions

How many 12 inch blocks for a queen quilt?

Without sashing, a 90" × 108" queen is about 7 blocks across and 9 down, which is 63 blocks for an 84" × 108" center. That is close to queen size on its own; a 3" border makes it 90" × 114".

How many blocks for a throw quilt?

A 50" × 65" throw with 12" blocks is 4 across by 5 down (20 blocks) for a 48" × 60" center. Add a small border to reach the full size.

Does the calculator use finished or unfinished block size?

Finished. Subtract 1/2" from the unfinished size before you enter it.
